2 ALL ABOUT RADIO CONTROL VEHICLES
Like most things in the world today there are hundreds of choices in radio control vehicles. When you visit a hobby store, it’s amazing how the shelves are filled with what seems like a vast selection of autos, trucks, boats and helicopters. There are race cars, hot rods, sporty autos, pick-up trucks, civilian and army helicopters, and speed boats to name just a few.
It’s easy to look at the radio control vehicles and say, “I like that one!” But a much better idea is to first learn the various features to be found in these toys and hobby vehicles. Once you understand what the choices are then it’s much easier to narrow the field.
One of the mistakes beginners make is choosing a radio control vehicle that is too difficult to operate at a beginner’s skill level. That leads right into a discussion of what is the difference between a toy radio control vehicle and a hobby radio control vehicle.
IS IT A TOY OR IS IT A HOBBY?
You are probably wondering what this is all about. Isn’t a toy radio control vehicle the same as a hobby vehicle? The answer is a resounding “no”. Toy RC vehicles are the inexpensive scale models that have very little power. A beginner can operate one with little difficulty even if he or she has never done so before. They cover a range of complexity from those intended to be used by very young children to adults.
A hobby radio control vehicle is generally one that will require the operator to develop some skill before being able to fully utilize the unit. Here are some other features of the hobby RC vehicle.
• Cost more than toy RC vehicles
• Usually have several movement features
• Often requires some basic maintenance
• Made of higher quality materials
• May require some assembly
• Can be upgraded
• Can be customized
Hobby RC vehicles are almost never found in toy stores or toy departments because they are more expensive and more complicated than toy vehicles. Hobby shops offer a range of vehicles that go from beginner styles to advanced and racing versions. Toy RC vehicles may have good functionality but they are often made cheaper simply because they are toys.
When you are buying a RC vehicle for a child under 12 years old, you will want to begin with a toy version. Later in this manual the process of matching the right RC vehicle to the operator is discussed.
POWERING UP YOUR RADIO CONTROL VEHICLE
So you like power! You like power in your full-sized car, truck or boat and want scaled power in your RC vehicle. If that’s the way you are approaching this hobby, you will be happy to know that the more advanced and complex RC vehicles can climb grades, travel off-road and reach high speeds.
The RC vehicles sold in hobby shops are powered in one of three ways.
An electric power source uses a battery. But of course, it is not strictly that simple because there are three kinds of batteries used.
• Nickel cadmium battery
• Nickel metal hydride battery
• Lithium polymer cell battery
The nickel cadmium battery is a rechargeable battery. The battery is made of nickel oxide hydroxide and comes with cadmium electrodes. The nickel metal hydride battery is also a rechargeable battery that is made of nickel oxide hydride but the negative electrode is made of an alloy. The benefit of using this type of battery is that it has more capacity than a nickel cadmium battery. The RC vehicle can run longer between charges.
Lithium polymer cell batteries are rechargeable too. These batteries are the preferred choice of some RC vehicle owners because they can produce more energy. These batteries also come in a variety of shapes and sizes so they can fit easily into the scale model vehicles.
But you do have to be sure the lithium batteries are only charged using the appropriate battery charger. Whereas the nickel cadmium battery and the nickel metal hydride battery can use the same charger, the lithium battery needs a specific lithium battery charger. Lithium batteries are not good choices for vehicles that will be operated by young children.
Nitro powered RC vehicles are running on nitro fuel. After the battery powered RC vehicles, this is probably the most popular power source for the hobby units. Nitro is fuel made by mixing methanol, nitromethane and synthetic oil. Additives are also found in the nitro fuel which is intended to prevent component corrosion and fuel gumming. The fuel is poured into the scale model internal combustion engine.
There are also gas powered RC vehicles. The gas powered vehicles run on a gas/oil mix similar to the mix used in household power tools and lawn mowers. These vehicles are literally like miniature cars and operate quite reliably. These units are usually also more expensive than nitro or battery operating vehicles.
COMPARING RADIO CONTROL VEHICLES BASED ON POWER SOURCE
The different power sources determine many things about the way the car gains speed and operates while in motion. Following is a summary of what you can expect.
• Nitro powered vehicles are often smaller than battery or gas powered cars
• Gas power is usually found in the larger RC vehicles
• Nitro and gas powered vehicles can run continuously as long as there is fuel without overheating
• Electric powered vehicles can reach top speed the quickest because of the way the engine is designed
ON-ROAD VERSUS OFF-ROAD
Are you born to be wild? Are you looking for adventure? If that’s the case then you might want to consider buying an off-road radio control vehicle. The scaled versions of full sized off-road vehicle models are designed to handle tougher and rougher terrain. They can often climb and handle angles and go over rocks and brush. They can also handle off-road race courses.
You can think of the off road RC vehicles as being the equivalent of an all-terrain-vehicle. The on-road vehicles are made to run on pavement or other even surfaces.
One of the things to keep in mind when choosing your radio control vehicle is to consider what kind of activities or racing you hope to do. That will often drive (no pun intended) your decision as to which vehicle to purchase. Both types of vehicles, on-road and off-road, are made with plenty of power.
